The reference technical standard (UNI 9994-1: 2013) defines phases and respective criteria that characterize the verification and maintenance activities:

• initial check
• surveillance
• periodic check
• scheduled review
• testing
• extra maintenance

This standard applies to the basic and extra maintenance of portable and wheeled fire extinguishers, including fire extinguishers for class D fires. Other details: identification data of the maintenance company, type of extinguisher, gross mass of the extinguisher, effective charge of the extinguisher, date of maintenance intervention, expiry of the next check according to the regulations, identification code of the maintainer.

The phases of periodic maintenance of fire extinguishers

Periodic maintenance of fire extinguishers is essential to ensure the correct functioning of the device in case of need.

PHASE 1 - INITIAL CHECK. It is a preliminary analysis aimed to:

• check that the fire extinguishers are in service and can be maintained. If maintenance cannot be guaranteed, the fire extinguisher must immediately be taken out of service;
• check the presence and legibility of the markings on the fire extinguishers;
• check the presence of the use and maintenance booklet provided by the extinguisher manufacturer, where applicable.

PHASE 2 - SURVEILLANCE

Surveillance, which is the responsibility of the employer or a person in charge, consists in periodically carrying out - with a frequency in this case not defined by the standard - of a series of checks on fire extinguishers:

• presence of the fire extinguisher and clear signaling of its location;
• visibility of the fire extinguisher, which must also be free from obstacles and immediately usable;
• the absence of tampering with the fire extinguisher;
• visibility and legibility of markers;
• the absence of anomalies in the fire extinguisher (clogged nozzles, leaks, signs of corrosion, etc.);
• the absence of damage to the fire extinguisher suppor[t structures;
• presence of the fire extinguisher maintenance tag, which must be correctly filled out.

PHASE 3 - PERIODIC CHECK

The periodic control activity differs from surveillance in that it must be performed by qualified personnel such as one of the Idini Estintori operators, at least every six months.

It consists of a series of preventive checks that will verify the efficiency of the device - without running tests. At the end of this phase, our operator will fill out an intervention report and update the maintenance card.

PHASE 4 - SCHEDULED REVIEW

As for the periodic control phase, even scheduled revision must be carried out by a qualified person from the Idini Estintori team and consists, in this case, of a series of technical interventions:

internal examination, functional check of components, replacement of safety devices, replacement of the extinguishing agent, seals, etc.

The periodic revision interventions will be defined, as per legislation, based on the type of extinguisher and its extinguishing agent.

PHASE 5 - TESTING

Testing is a preventive measure through which our specialized operators will check the stability of the fire extinguisher tank or cylinder. The fire extinguishers removed for overhaul / testing will be temporarily replaced with other devices with the same performance characteristics.

The periodic testing is also defined in this case by the type of fire extinguisher.

PHASE 6 - EXTRA MAINTENANCE

This phase includes all those operations aimed at restoring the efficiency of the fire extinguisher, if routine maintenance operations are not sufficient.
