Self-contained breathing apparatus are personal protective equipment (PPE) essential to ensure the safety of the individual by protecting the respiratory tract, when you are in highly polluted or oxygen-free environments. They guarantee complete respiratory autonomy deriving from the breathable air contained in a cylinder and are essential in emergency situations such as fires or disasters.

How does a self-contained breathing apparatus work?

In open-circuit compressed air self-contained breathing apparatus, the air is contained within cylinders made of metal - or composite - material filled to a pressure of 200 or 300 bar. The pressure reduction of the breathing air to a medium pressure value (normally less than 10 bar) is achieved by means of a special reducer. The air then passes through a medium pressure supply pipe to the dispenser, which doses it according to the specific needs of the user. The facials to be used are full masks, inside which the exhaled air passes to the outside thanks to the exhalation valve. During inhalation, a negative pressure is established inside the mask, while in positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus a slight positive pressure of 10/20 millibar is maintained. All compressed air breathing apparatus are also equipped with a pressure gauge that allows you to check the residual availability of breathable air at any time.

The UNI 11439: 2012 standard

Self-contained breathing apparatus maintenance consists of a series of checks carried out with specific equipment, in compliance with the Ministerial Decree 02/05/2001 and the UNI 11439: 12 standard. This standard refers to open-circuit compressed air breathing apparatus at positive pressure (in the configuration with full mask and regulator) and provides users with a series of criteria to promote awareness of the elements of attention that can, if neglected, lead to device malfunction.

The maintenance of self-contained breathing apparatus must be arranged according to the type of self-contained breathing apparatus, the working environment, the working conditions and the risks present. The procedures must compulsorily be carried out annually by expert and qualified personnel.

These procedures, referring to each self-contained breathing apparatus complete with backrest, cylinder, regulator and mask, include:

• for open circuit self-contained breathing apparatus

  • checking the tightness of the pressure reducer;
  • checking the calibration of the pressure reducer;
  • checking the calibration of the safety valve;
  • checking the calibration of the acoustic alarm signal;
  • checking the tightness of high and medium pressure components;
  • checking the accuracy of the pressure gauge;
  • checking and cleaning the sintered filter;
  • the o.ring replacement on the A.P. cylinder connection;
  • a general test of functionality;
  • general cleaning / disinfection of the appliance

• for the full face mask

  • checking the seal of the mask, both at positive and negative pressure;
  • checking the opening pressure of the exhalation valve;
  • checking the phonic membrane (expiration and integrity);
  • cleaning / disinfection and drying.

• for cylinders

  • internal control and inspection;
  • hydrostatic testing (if necessary);
  • the replacement / recharge of breathable air (at 200-300 bar) with air compliant and UNI - EN 12021 standards

At the end of the checks, our operators will issue, for each overhauled self-contained breathing apparatus, a specific certification which will certify its complete efficiency.
